COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION

CASUALTIES BURIED IN NEWMARKET CEMETERY
BUT NOT NEWMARKET BORN OR RESIDENT INCLUDING OUR POLISH ALLIES
INCLUDING ALSO SOME FOREIGN NATIONALS FORMERLY BURIED IN NEWMARKET

Another Polish soldier discovered - July 2019
Jan ZMURKIEWICZ, aged 25, No.30/z/1922/iiiW.B?, a private in the 3rd Battalion, Carpathian Rifles, who died at 310 Base Unit at Chippenham on 16th April 1948 of a coronary thrombosis. This was outside the UK criteria for a war grave. He has so far not been traced on any records other than the burial register.
Jan rests behind the Cross of Sacrifice, behind the right hand tree, in grave O:372, which sadly has no headstone. This is immediately to the right of the grave of Christopher FREEMAN (5 months old).

Each year it seems to have been the custom recently for someone (unkown as yet) to visit the Polish military graves and at first they left small lamps, with tea candle inside, at each grave. Since 2021 the custom has changed to tying a red and white (Polish national colours), round each Polish headstone. Attempts so far have failed to find out who does this, which is a pity as the local Polish population should be invited to join our Remembrance Ceremony
